4 Tips You Should Always Consider When Choosing a Car Seat for Your Child
A car seat is one of the most important items you’ll ever buy for your child. When traveling in the car, failing to have a car seat that’s appropriate for your child’s size and age can put them at grave risk of injury or worse during a road traffic collision. In some states, you are required by law to ensure that your child or baby is in the correct car seat when traveling. So, it’s important to put a lot of thought and effort into selecting the right one for them. We’ve put together some top tips on choosing the perfect car seat for your child.
Tip #1. Know Your Vehicle:
Before you head out to the shops, take some time to go through your vehicle owner’s manual. This will ensure a better buying experience by helping you determine which car seat is the best fit for the car your drive. Car seats may be attached in two different ways; either using the regular seat belt or with the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system, which is included in all new vehicles. If you decide to use LATCH, you’ll need to be aware of where the attachments are in your car. Consider using the seatbelt if there are no LATCH attachments in the middle seat – positioning your child here and rear-facing is safest.
Tip #2. Consider the Room in Your Back Seat:
It’s a good idea to measure your back seat before selecting a car seat. A seat that has a large base may not be the best choice for a small car, particularly if you typically have other children or passengers traveling in the back. Before you head to the shops, have measurements handy and bring a measuring tape to ensure that the seat will fit.
Tip #3. Think About Other Uses:
For babies, in particular, car seats can double up as a buggy or stroller attachment, or a simple carrier for your baby when out and about. Think about other potential uses that you might have for the car seat – for example, if you have a newborn baby, it may be worth considering a car seat that doubles up as a stroller seat. Don’t forget to think about any additional accessories that you might need, such as baby car seat covers to shield your little one from the sun, wind, and rain.
Tip #4. Put Safety and Security First:
Last but not least, safety and security should be your top priorities when selecting a new car seat for your child. This is particularly important if you’re buying a car seat for a toddler. Select a seat with two-piece clips that are designed to be difficult for little hands to open. Without these, it’ll be easier for your little one to unbuckle and climb out of their seat alone. You should also look for a seat with easy-to-use harness adjustments; a harness that is incorrectly adjusted can make the seat less effective in the event of a collision.
Your child’s car seat could literally save their life, so make sure you put a lot of effort into choosing the right one for them.
